Bercovici Leads Sun Devils to 38-34 Victory Over Trojans
Tempe, Ariz— It was absolute mayhem in Pasadena, Calif. when Mike Bercovici led Arizona State to a game-winning drive over the 16th ranked USC Trojans that was capped off with a 46-yard hail mary to Jaelen Strong as time expired to win the game 38-34.
Bercovici and the Sun Devil offense started the last drive of the game on their own 28 yard line, with just 23 seconds left, and no timeouts. It only took four plays to go from a losing effort to the number one play on SportsCenter.
On the last play Bercovici rolled out to the right side and threw it up into a crowd of Sun Devil receivers and Trojan defenders. Out of no where, Strong leapt up, snagged the ball at the three-yard line, and waltzed into the end zone untouched. Sun Devil fans had their prayers answered.
Trailing 27-18 with under four minutes in the game, Bercovici carried the Sun Devils on three touchdown scoring drives. He would finish the ball game with 510 yards and five touchdown strikes.
In his first two starts in relief of the injured Taylor Kelly, Bercovici has thrown for 998 yards, eight touchdowns, and two interceptions. He was also honored by the NCAA for being the offensive player of the week for the Pac-12. Not too shabby for a backup.
The running game was nonexistent in this showdown for the ASU offense, with Deantre Lewis leading the team in rushing yards with a measly 15. DJ Foster also chipped in with 13 rushing yards of his own.
If Bercovici wasn’t the player of the game, the honor would fall into the hands of Strong. The junior redshirt finished with 10 catches for 202 yards and 3 touchdowns. He now has three games with 10 catches and 100 receiving yards to go along with his five touchdown receptions on the year.
The Arizona State Sun Devils will play the Stanford Cardinal at Sun Devil Stadium on October 18 in their next game in Tempe, Arizona.
